Congratulations to Hello Insight's 2019 HI Impact Awardees

Always learning and constantly reflecting, Hello Insight members are dedicated to improving their work with young people. We’re excited to honor seventeen of these members with the 2019 HI Impact Awards. e to our members’ success.

During the 2018/19 school year, 459 programs serving more than 27,000 young people were included in our analysis to determine award recipients. HI Impact Awardees had programs that rose to the top, using positive youth development (PYD) practices that support young people to grow significantly more social and emotional learning (SEL) capacities than their peers. In fact, they had programs in the top four percent of others using Hello Insight.

The development of SEL is now more important than ever, with growing evidence showing that SEL qualities rival academic or technical skills in their ability to predict employment and earnings, among other outcomes. While the demand for such skills has increased over the past 20 years, many employers around the world have reported that job candidates lack the soft skills needed to fill available positions. In the face of current societal economic, environmental, and social challenges, the promotion of these nonacademic skills is seen as critical. Business and political leaders are urging schools to pay more attention to equipping students with these outcomes.

We are honored to recognize leaders in the development of these skills—leaders we can all learn from. So, in the spirit of collaborative learning, we present the 2019 HI Impact Awardees:

We want to underscore the amazing work done by Hands In 4 Youth, Queens Community House, and Christodora: Nature, Learning, Leadership. These organizations have won HI Impact Awards for multiple years. This is an extraordinary feat, as the competition has gotten steeper as more programs across the nation join the Hello Insight community.

Over the past six years, we’ve had the distinct pleasure of working in close partnership with Youth INC a venture philanthropy organization improving the lives of young people in New York City by empowering the nonprofits that serve them. Many of their grantees continue to rise to the top, delivering exceptional programming and impact on young people. Youth INC engages these grantees through their Metrics Program that helps Hello Insight members become learning organizations by turning their research-based recommendations into ongoing improvement. Their support has empowered organizations like Christodora and Hands In 4 Youth to become HI Impact Awardees year after year. They’ve also supported newer awardees like Chess in the Schools, Girls Write Now, and Opening Act to build their organizational capacity and management practices in order to have an outstanding impact on the young people they serve.

The YMCA of the USA has also been an incredible partner, bolstering ongoing learning and continuous improvement in the areas of PYD and SEL by scaling Hello Insight across their network. We are thrilled to highlight the work of three YMCAs for their outstanding work and high impact: the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, the YMCA of Greater Richmond, and the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina.

For two years, the Funders Collaborative For Youth Organizing (FCYO) has sponsored youth organizing groups to measure SEL and critical consciousness outcomes using Hello Insight. This year, we are celebrating two of their grantees outstanding impact on young people, Empower Montana and Californians for Justice Education Fund are HI Impact Awardees.

We also want to acknowledge Elma Philanthropies and the Grunin Foundation for their investment in learning and their support of Neutral Zone and Toms River School District—two more HI Impact Awardees that we can all learn from.

We at Hello Insight want to thank each one or our members and those that support them for their commitment to excellence and ongoing learning. When we work as a collective, we all gain access to a new world of insights that help us better serve young people.

Be on the lookout for a series of in-depth, online conversations with staff from HI Impact Awardees to hear more about how they’ve achieved such amazing results.
