Since launching Hello Insight: Sports two years ago, we have seen over 200 sports-based youth development (SBYD) programs nationwide use the tool to continuously gather feedback from thousands of young people and measure their social and emotional learning (SEL).

In 2016, with the support of The New York Community Trust, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and Vita Sports Partners, we piloted Hello Insight: Sports within the Hello Insight platform that measures the SEL capacities best nurtured by SBYD programs. After collecting and analyzing thousands of survey responses to ensure reliability, we released Hello Insight: Sports in 2018 as a fully-automated measurement tool available in our platform.

The tool measures the following SEL outcomes: academic self-efficacy, contribution, positive identity, self-confidence, self-management, social skills, and goal orientation.

Mounting research also shows that as SBYD programs promote these capacities, longer-term outcomes will occur, including increased academic skills, positive behaviors, reduced risky behaviors, improved career readiness, and, ultimately thriving, happy, and healthy young people.[1]

HI Sports also measures seven research-based SBYD practices shown to promote SEL: building teams, challenging growth, engaging authentically, expanding interests, managing goals, promoting peer bonds, and sharing power. All of these research-based PYD experiences are important and interconnected.

Building Team: The Distinct Power of SBYD

Since the inception of HI Sports in 2016, our research team has been investigating the unique role that teams play in how SBYD program’s approach to building SEL in young athletes. Building upon our core research-backed framework, we have been testing questions in surveys implemented by HI Sports members nationwide to determine how the critical experience of teams leads to SEL growth.

After our latest dataset analysis in summer 2020, we are excited to announce that the validated experience called Build Team is now live in HI Sports, making it possible for programs to measure this unique and critical facet of sports-based youth development.
