2021 HI Impact BIPOC SBYD Awardees
Hello Insight recently released a study supported by Laureus USA and the Allstate Foundation - Sports-Based Youth Development: Hitting a Home Run In SEL. This study showed that youth sports programs play a significant role in fostering critical social and emotional learning (SEL) skills necessary to succeed in school, careers, and life, especially for young people of color.
As a follow up to this study, Hello Insight was asked to identify organizations that did exceptional work to strengthen these outcomes during the 2018/2019 school year (prior to the COVID 19 pandemic and reflecting data from the study). We analyzed data from 90 SBYD programs and identified ten that supported a high proportion of African American and Latin(o)(a)(x) young people to develop significant and meaningful gains in SEL, which have been shown to rival academic or technical skills in their ability to predict employment and earnings. While the demand for such skills has increased over the past 20 years, many employers around the world have reported that job candidates lack the soft skills needed to fill the available positions. In the face of current societal, economic, environmental, and social challenges, the promotion of these nonacademic skills is seen as more critical than ever before.
